Happy Birthday, Nanny Carol

My mother gave me this Christmas bell on her birthday....hmmmm....maybe 20+ years ago.
I wear it every year on her birthday.

We had a great day today.
No work.
No school.
Gorgeous snow day.

We took mom to eat Mexican food and
started the cooking process on our annual Party Mix recipe - no longer Chex but organic cereals, pretzels, and pecans.

I helped Mary bake her first cake last night - Nanny Carol's birthday cake.
We went through all the steps of gathering ingredients, preheating oven, and finding bowls and measuring cups.

I pulled out a fork for Mary to stir the ingredIents....she immediately picked up the cake mix box, flipped it to the back of the box with pictures, and pointed to the pic of THE MIXER.

She grunted, "Uh uh."

This girl wanted machinery.
She wanted noise.
She wanted to handle this tool and wreak some smoothness into that cake batter.

And she did!

We love you, mom. You are a treasure in our lives! Happy Happy Birthday.

Snow Day!

Weekend Activities Celebrating the Season of Our Savior's Birth

Mary and Kaitlyn - her aunt lives in the group home and her mom works weekends here, too

The group home folks put on a play.
It was sooo touching.

Mary snd Joseph

Sam the Artist Man sketched the backdrop.

They Finally Met

This is Cora, from India, with Mary...both home to their families for about the same amount of time.
Mary - 3 years
Cora - 2.5 years

This little darling is totally blind.
Her mom and I had emailed back and forth before I ever went to China to meet Mary. Mom is a friend of Marlene's, and that's how we sorta hooked up.

This morning I took the weekend folks to their handbell performance at a sweet little church, and lo and behold....this cool family attends here.

Chatted with Cora's mom, hugged necks, and was thankful for the opportunity to connect.

Hurried to late afternoon wedding -

Kind, gentle young teacher
Marrying a kind, young gentleman

Beautiful little church
Touching ceremony
Lovely. Just lovely.

Got the Christmas tree out (per Mary's deep desire)
Gonna decorate it today

Been to church - super service
Headed to mom's later to deliver leftovers of veg-all from Marlene. We had gone by Mar's house after the wedding (4 blocks from her house).

We've had a full week - working, schooling, cooking, traveling, visiting with family.
Made some memories.
My favorite activity!!!

Give Thanks - Sang This Song in Church this Morning

"Give thanks with a grateful heart
Give thanks to the Holy One
Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son

And now
let the weak say, "I am strong'
Let the poor say, 'I am rich'
Because of what
the Lord has done
for us....

Give thanks."
Took my weekend group home folks to their handbell performance
out  in the country
to a sweet country church.

My girls were there, too.

Some of those folks have been in that very church for 70 years.

I've been there through the years
on the weekend beforeThanksgiving.

Seems I tend to work this very same weekend because I love going back and visiting with folks at this precious church.

My girls pick pecans that come from an ancient pecan tree -- next to the cemetery. We did this last year and then took our load of pecans to a co-op to be shelled....for a really low cost!

The grounds are simply lovely on an Autumn day like today.

I'm so glad we have treasured traditions
that my girls enjoy!

Making Dressing - It's a Religious Experience!!

I'm working this weekend/week at the Group Home so we're taking some time (in their big kitchen) to whip up the Thanksgiving dressing.
Takes team work - for sure.
Makes it fun, too.

This is some of the decor in front of the lovely group home.

Making our traditional dressing
Aunt Ann's recipe

Chopping loads of celery, onion, green onion,
Adding chopped chicken, cornbread, a bit of rice, broth, a little stuffing mix, poultry seasoning, a tad of sage

Making Christmas Cards for Shut Ins

The children's Missions Group at church is making Christmas cards -- in October.

An annual event held at church for elderly and "shut ins" -- is expecting hundreds MORE this year.
That's awesome.

So...folks are prepping now to be ready.

It's a phenomenal gathering, and all guests are treated like royalty.

I'm thrilled children can impact lives in such a meaningful way.
