Such a Sweetie Pie. We Went to her Birthday Party.

Mary was proud to design the card!

"Oh, so funny.... not s'poze to put clothes in the bowl.
You s'poze to put f-o-o-d in the bowl!"

(I was handwashing a blue top.)

Friday Night - Family Night at Nanny Carol's

Caramel candy melted

Emily's funny look below is because - as she said - "I was trying not to smile too big because I had caramel in my teeth."

Organic chocolate chips melted with a tad of butter

Mary was having fun playing in the dish water...and washing a few things.

Celebrating God's Gifts of Fall: APPLES!

We bought one of each type of apple we found at a local  grocery store.

I think we came home with 11 different types.

We will slice them, compare and contrast them, and just observe the characteristics of the different varieties.

Dipping sauces will be caramel or Lilly's Organic Chocolate Chips (sweetened with Stevia) -- both melted.

We had fun finding these.

I actually took a picture of a daughter with each of the 11 apples.
I'll spare folks the many photos.

I told curious bystanders in the store, "Oh. We're on a field trip."

Some of our varieties are:
Golden Delicious
Granny Smith
Tango something or other
Red Delicious
Pink Cripps (?) - gotta check on that one

Mercy me...
Way to go Johnny Appleseed!

Ahhh. The First Day of My Favorite Season

I checked this book out of the church library tonight
Read it to Mary as a devotional - bedtime story.

She sat next to me and played with a lavender hippopotamus puppet.
Fun. Fun.

Mary said,
"Mom. My lip hurts.
Not my down one.
My up top one."

Finished Creative Project about Sojourner Truth

Made from flattened toilet paper rolls...colored paper, a few sticky letters, brads (metal buttons) with alphabet letters on them, ribbons from gifts given, and lots of imagination.

Emily enjoyed creating this little "alternative" book report -- and took lots of pride in her final work.

A Day Full of Bouncing and Rolling

Joshua - Morgan's new little brother
Been home about 9 months

Happy Birthday, Morgan June!

Then we headed to a skating rink to celebrate another birthday - Anna's.

Anna's birthday - she's on the left.
Jenna's on the right.

They lived in the same orphanage as babies and were adopted at the same time by mutual, single schoolteacher friends.

Imagine that!

I'm Asking Santa for 10,000 Bowls of Pho Soup

These are the bowls of Pho lined up
-- for breakfast or lunch or dinner

The girls love this stuff any time.

Molly preppin' breakfast.
She's really the instant soup fixer at our house.
Notice the hot pot on our very short counter in above photo.

Lots of nostalgic items from my childhood - and a few aquired from close friends or family.

This brand is found in the organic, health food area of grocery stores.

It's got a better reputation than Ramen noodles.

Anyhoo - it's a fave at our house.

Vietnamese in origin - not Chinese.

Great Biography of an Inspiring Woman!

Emily's Project on Sojourner Truth

She's covering toilet paper rolls --flattened -- with scrapbook paper.

Connected on a ring.

She's going to write about her impression of Sojourner Truth...using words such as courageous.

Like I've said - no flat piece of paper book reports with recalled information.

Instead - What did YOU "take away" from this story?

Student of the Month from Her Class

The precious teacher said Mary got this award because she is such a good helper. Awwww.
She's come a long way.

I'm already scheduling my 1 year post placement visit, report, and photo submissions.

These are required by the Chinese government.

I've had 2 with Mary thus far. I have 3 more reports due after this one.
Maybe at 2 year mark, an in between one, and then 5 years.

Same for Molly.

Did pretty much the same with Emily.

I've got so many government ties on two continents -- I'm gonna be a double naught spy one day.

Just like Jethro Bodin!

Molly's Science Project

The 3-D flowers below are made with real leaves and stems from a Crape Myrtle...
And wrapping tissue scrunched into the shapes of Crape Myrtle blooms.

I love it!

I told the girls, "We ain't doin' no stick-in-the-mud-type science projects!!!
That's my Ellie Mae Clampet interpretation.

I told them, "I want you to use your creativity.
Have fun.
Use a variety of materials -
No flat piece of paper with boring reports.

Find something you're studying that really interests you - and focus on that.
Let's go find it.
Touch it.
Smell it.
Research it.
Photograph it...
And then you decide how you want to present your findings."

I think Molly got the gist of the conversation 'just right'!

Don't tell my mother I borrowed her wrapping tissue without asking.

"God Created the Rainbow. She Did." (Mary's direct quote)

Uhm...those male and female pronouns are real kickers for my little English Language Learner.

Pretty funny, tho!

Mary Has a Lantana Bloom in Her Hair the pics below Molly picked it from Nanny Carol's yard.

Learning the Concept of 5 + 1, + 2...Using an Egg Carton

...with the 2 end 'egg holders' cut off

There are 5 counters on the top row
kids have to develop in their understanding that if 1 more counter is added to the next row...
they don't really need to go back and count the top 5 again.

But they will.

Time and time again.

Add 2 counters on the next row...and ask, "How many counters do we have now?"
They'll still go back and count the top 5 before giving the new total.
You can add 3, 4, 5, and keep going.
They'll still count the top 5 and add on the new ones.

This all necessary to them developing in number sense.

Eventually - it all falls into place.

But it takes exposure
In different circumstances
With hands on learning

Over and over and over

Back to the Leaf Project - How 'Bout That New Iron?

Yup. Thanks to Janice...we're back in the iron business.

An orange and white Sunbeam!!

She said she had several at the house.
Seems her hubbie tends to toss them (put them aside) once they sputter water on his nice, crisp shirts.

Can't say I blame him.
But then again -
I don't have any nice, crisp shirts.

I'm starting to get the urge to do some ironing
You know
Teach the girls how to iron.

Let's see how long THAT lasts!

Emily is getting labels ready - to identify 4 aspects of the leaves...dealing with the veins, outside shaping, and 2 other parts that I seem to not remember at this moment.
